The Theatre

ANCIENT TESTIMONY · PAUSANIAS 3.14.1West of the agora, near the cenotaph of Brasidas, Pausanias saw a theatre “of white marble and worth seeing”; opposite it were the tombs of Pausanias the regent and of Leonidas, whose bones he says were brought back from Thermopylae forty years after the battle (3.14.1).
EXCAVATED EVIDENCEThe theatre on the southern slope of the acropolis hill is visible today; the British School explored it from its early Sparta seasons. The standing remains belong largely to the Roman period.
CONJECTUREEarlier phases of the theatre are known mostly from texts.
