Founded in 1874–75, it is described by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation as the first Greek museum built outside the capital. In 1876 it received 288 antiquities collected in 1872 by Panagiotis Stamatakis, and since an expansion in 1936 it has had seven halls (SNF announcement, 16 July 2020). Its exhibits run from the Neolithic to the Late Roman period, led by finds from Sparta’s great sanctuaries (Ministry of Culture, Directorate of Archaeological Museums).
The architect is named differently in official sources: G. Katsaros (odysseus.culture.gr; SNF) or the Danish architect Theophil Hansen (archaeologicalmuseums.gr). Odysseus attributes the 1930s rooms to “Christiansen Hansen”. We leave this open until checked against the museum’s own publications.

COMPLETING THIS WINGListing the whole collection needs the museum’s cooperation: the Ephorate of Antiquities of Laconia (Hellenic Ministry of Culture) holds the inventory. Published sources include the first catalogue by Dressel and Milchhöfer (cited by SNF), Tod and Wace’s Catalogue of the Sparta Museum (1906), the museum entry on odysseus.culture.gr and the Directorate of Archaeological Museums page.
